Are you getting what you paid for?

A few years back we were quoting a very large racking project. As you would expect a project worth a few hundred thousand dollars warrants a good deal of research.

We approached several of our suppliers with the rack specifications and patiently waited for a response. A few days later the quotes came in and the first thing I did was check the bottom line…….the price. Wow, I thought to myself there is a huge disparity in costings.

What the hell is going on here?

After checking that there were no omissions from the quotes and that I was actually comparing apples with apples I decided to get some freight prices.

It was then that the penny dropped!

There was a difference of nearly 10 tons in the total weight of each quote. No wonder there was such a price variation.

Just for the record we went with the slightly more expensive “heavier” quote and won the project.

The saying goes that you get what you pay for and it certainly is true. This is the reason why I want to let you in on something that we noticed here at City Shelving.

During a recent sales meeting we were discussing this “cheap” long span shelving that is flooding onto sites like             EBay and Gumtree. So how do they manage to get the prices so low? Obviously a smaller operator has much lower overheads like rent, wages, insurances and I could keep on going.

So I went onto Ebay and Gumtree to really examine the cheap long span shelving and saw that the gross weight of one bay came to 45kg. An equivalent bay of our Mini Span shelving comes in at 85kg. An extra 40kg of steel in our product which is nearly double the weight of the “cheap” long span shelving.

In summation most of the savings are coming out of the product. So even though they make claims of how much weight the product can support……can it really?

It seems that you do get what you pay for as famously quoted by John Ruskin here.

If you don’t want to risk your money then dealing with an established shelving and racking company is the way to go. City Shelving sells quality products and being in the industry for well over 20 years we know what we are talking about.

With the end of the financial year upon us, now is a good time to make the purchase you may have been putting off. We are offering 20% off Mini Span until the end of June which is a bargain.

Race in and get a great deal
